THE RENAISSANCE RISES
The word "Renaissance is a French word meaning re-birth, and that is literally what it means. It refers to a re-birth of arts and culture in Europe after the Middle Ages, which basically overlooked the arts. The Renaissance was a movement dedicated to the rediscovery and use of classical learning; in other words, it drew on the knowledge and attitudes from the Ancient Greek and Roman eras. it also can refer to the period, c. 1400 – c. 1600.
“High Renaissance” generally refers to c. 1480 – c. 1520. This period was dynamic, with European explorers finding new continents, the transformation of trading methods and patterns, the decline of feudalism, and the rise of scientific developments, such as the Copernican system of the cosmos and the rise of gunpowder. Many of these changes were triggered, in part, by the Renaissance, such as classical mathematics stimulating new financial trading mechanisms, or new techniques from the east boosting ocean navigation.
The High Renaissance period spanned for a brief period of about 75 years and went from approximately 1495 to 1520. It was said to have been created by the artistic genius of people like Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Raphael, and Michelangelo.
