SOCIAL STUDIES/LANGUAGE ARTS: CREATING A SOCIETY
(for use in conjunction with the study of Ancient Greece or
reading The Giver by Lois Lowry)
You and your team
are going to create a new society by conducting research on social structures, geography, weather, architecture, law, and other aspects of any civilization. You can locate your community anywhere in the world, but research your sites before deciding on a final place.
Requirements
You and your team will write a series of documents to define and explain your society, create maps and charts to explain different aspects of your community, write an anthem, and present your society to your classmates. You need to meet the following requirements by answering questions and providing necessary information about your society (see below). The method of presentation you choose is up to you.

Requirements

1. Name Your Society. What
does the name mean, where did it originate from, and how does it represent your society? Make your explanation clear. This will be in the form of a short paragraph.
(5-7 sentences; 10 points)
2. Society Location. Locate your society on the classroom/country map, and give its population. Explain in a paragraph why you located the society where you did. Remember to think about why cities are located where they are. There is a reason San Diego is located on the coast as well as a reason why no large cities are in the desert. (10 points)
3. How Do People Live in Your Society? How do they earn a living, where do they work? How many hours a week do they work? What types of activities do they do for recreation? What are their most prized possessions? This will be in the form of three paragraphs. (30 points)
4. What Do Your Houses and/or Buildings Look Like? Design and color a drawing on a full piece of paper that shows a typical home in your society. Build a model for extra credit (10 points)

5. Create a Banner or Flag with a National
Symbol for Your Society.
What you choose for your banner and symbol must have meaning-explain what it is
in a paragraph. (20 points)
6. Trade. What will your society produce, what will be the surplus goods you export through trade? What will you import through trade? Consider your geography. (10 points)
7. Draw a Physical Map of Your Society. Make a map that shows the layout of your society. Be sure to include where important buildings are located, where resources are located, a key, a compass rose, and any other key features. Color your map to best illustrate its different features. (20 points)
8. What Type of Government Will You Have? Will it be democratic, totalitarian, a monarchy, oligarchy, aristocracy, communist, socialist, or a mix? You must know` these words and decide which one/s you will choose. Why did you choose this government? Who are your leaders? How are laws made? Who enforces these laws? What are some of the job positions in your government? This should be in the form of three paragraphs. (30 points)
9. Create Five Guiding Laws for Your Society. Write them out, and in five paragraphs explain why you have them, and how you insure their existence in your society. Refer to the United States Bill of Rights for ideas. (50 points)
10. Write an Anthem for Your society. This should be a song or poem that everyone will know and will sing/recite at special events. Explain the meaning of the song/poem. (20 points)
11. Currency. What does the currency look like? Draw or make a coin. What do the symbols mean? Explain the symbols in one paragraph. 20 points)
13. Environment/Nature. Explain how you will solve and/or prevent environmental problems in a paragraph. (20 points)

Assessment: You will be graded on the individual parts of the project, your presentation, and your ability to work in a group. A rubric will outline the expectations for the project portion of this assignment. We will use the writing rubric already handed out, you will receive a group work rubric, and you will receive a presentation rubric.
